After reading and discussing "The Great Gatsby" answer the following questions:
1. Discuss Gatsby's character as Nick perceives him throughout the novel. What makes Gatsby “great”?
2. What is Nick like as a narrator? Is he a reliable storyteller, or does his version of events seem suspect? How do his qualities as a character affect his narration?
3. What are some of The Great Gatsby's most important symbols? What does the novel have to say about the role of symbols in life?
4. How does the geography of the novel dictate its themes and characters? What role does setting play in The Great Gatsby?
5. In what sense is The Great Gatsby an autobiographical novel? Does Fitzgerald write more of himself into the character of Nick or the character of Gatsby, or are the author's qualities found in both characters?
nice questions! i will copy the and answer them at home, i don't have enough time right now, check out my avatar jajaj
ReplyDeletegabi, have a look at our brand new blog!

I think that the first impression Nick gets from Gastby is that he is as superficial as the other characters, but throughout the novel his opinion changes. Later on he sees Gatsby as a man with great determination and strong will, it's that what makes him great, apart from his ability of making his American Dream come true.
ReplyDeleteAs regards the 2nd question, I consider Nick a reliable storyteller: his narration includes many details, as well as personal comments, but from the very beginning we are told that he is different from the rest of the characters because of his strong sense of morality. The fact that the narrator is a down-to-earth, honest man makes the story seem precise.
One of the symbols is the green light at the end of Daisy's dock, which represents hope. Dr Eckleburg's eyes represent God. Nick, and West Egg represent the old values, while East Egg represents modernity.
I'll answer the other two questions tomorrow! I have to go
P.S: sorry for the mistakes
Great Gatsby
ReplyDelete1- He saw him as a representative of the "Jazz Age", because he lead a glamorous life, in spite of that Gatsby is doomed and there is a touch of disaster on his life, which ends badly as does America in 1929
Question nº4:
ReplyDeleteThe different landscape enphasises the differences between the caracters, as well as their ambitions. Even the place where they come from makes their values different. People living in East Egg are rich, careless, self-centred, while paople living in West Egg have different values, and prioritise different things. Geography helps to emphasise contrast.
As regards question nº 5, it can be said that The Great Gatsby is an autobiographical novel because it's based on the author's experience when he tried to marry Zelda. His life is reflected in Gatsby's. He could only win Zelda's heart by becoming rich and successful, and her careless, ambitious attitude resembles Daisy's.
i agree with Eli in that Jay Gatsby was able to achieve the american dream, and, thinking about this questinwithValeria and claudia, we thought that perhaps it was because Nick sees Gatsby as an honest self made man, he does nt pay much attention to the fact that Gatsby got his wealth thanks to illegal alcohol business, and as he finds his death at the end of summer, also the decade of prosperity american was enjoying after W W l ends in l929.
ReplyDeleteI think that Nick is a reliable storyteller. He tells the story from his point of view, but he is true to his way of thinking and he does not become involved with the irresponsibility and carelesness of the very rich. He never judged anybody because his father told him when he was a child that he shouldn`t criticize people because not everybody was lucky as he was.
